Just a thought - editorial

What if this gasification plant is a green solution and it never gets a chance to prove that because too many people are being so closed minded and set in their opinions?

I am not suggesting that this is a good thing for the environment or Kamloops, however what if it holds the key to unlocking other green solutions as experts study its impact?

Two hours into the public forum last night it felt like it wasn't going anywhere: both sides were talking to a brick wall.

Why would the ministry of environment be lying about it not being a health hazard? What do they have to gain from having a creosote burning plant here in Kamloops?

Kamloops the Week recently published a letter to the editor from Barry Penner, who stands by the decision to issue the permit and reminds Kamloopsians that it was not his personal choice. The decision was made by a council, some of who live here in town.

  1. See the problem with civic engagement? Most people say they'd for progression and change, but when it comes down to it, for actual projects to be approved, people prefer the status quo.

From John Scopes to Obamacare, it's just one of those things. We will never know, and after the forum last night, I can say that I don't expect them to go through with the project. Sigurdson runs a company that is used to having public support, and he's a nice guy. He doesn't want to be the bad guy in any of this, and a couple of hundred Kamloopians who came to a forum to be heard rather than to listen, without ever being in danger of having their minds changed, has knocked his solution off course.

    NIMBY.

  2. I'm trying to see both sides and I think what it all comes down to is what if either side is missing something really important because both are too stubborn to be objective.

What if the MOE is wrong and this will cause major health problems?

But then again, what if the protesting Kamloopsians are missing out on an opportunity?
